Take a Moment to Be Grateful for Technological Advancements You Benefit From Daily
- by admin
Every year at Thanksgiving, we eat too much, feel momentarily grateful, and go to sleep early to take advantage of the Black Friday sales. Well, some do-others prefer to ignore that whole fiasco, and with good reason. But while you should definitely take a moment every day to be grateful for food, shelter, employment, and loved ones, you should also take a moment to thank human ingenuity, the force that gave us the iPhone, IV bags made through heat sealing, and the internal combustion engine. Given that we are constantly inundated with new technology, this may feel redundant, but there are actually a great deal of technological and scientific advancements we see every day… and take for granted. Here are just a few that you may very well benefit from every day.
The five second rule may not be accurate, but just think-it wouldn’t even be possible without Germ Theory, and the various experiments and medical advancements that followed. If it weren’t for germ theory, you wouldn’t see heat sealed bags in hospitals. You wouldn’t see Hazmat crews walking around contaminated sites in radio frequency sealed specialized suits. Germ theory has extended our lifespan, reduced our infant mortality rate, and made our little excursions into infectious disease mostly short-lived and non-fatal. Sure, science has yet to cure the common cold yet, but at least it can treat an ear infection.
You know how durable your backpack is? The technology responsible for heat sealing bags made it possible. In fact, any number of consumer goods, from tents to car seats, are made through coated fabric welding and other bonding techniques. While you may feel that advanced industrial processes like radio frequency welding are to think, but these products actually have a history that dates back millennia-all the way back to the first hominids who realized that weaving fibers together can create lasting, durable, relatively lightweight (at least compared to stone and wood) containment vessels, not to mention clothing, linens, and even waterproof products made from coated fabric. Advanced welding helped, but it isn’t the be-all and end-all of innovation.
That said, don’t knock radio frequency welding. It has rendered nearly every material more versatile, even the most versatile material of them all-plastic. With a history that goes back to the late nineteenth century, plastic is now frequently derided as being an environmental nightmare. Of course, that all goes back to human use-plastic can be quite harmless so long as it is treated as a resource rather than a disposable material. It is of particular value in the medical industry, but it can also be used to create coated fabric; it can be welded together to form durable shapes, and it is imminently malleable. As for its environmental impact, this can be reduced dramatically through recycling and by developing degradable varieties, and most plastic companies invest heavily in both processes.
